What is Fertility Treatment?

The process of reproductive technology which are used to attain pregnancy by artificial or partially artificial methods. The process of reproductive technology are mainly used to treat infertility and it is known as fertility treatments.

TYPES OF FERTILITY TREATMENT

IVF – In Vitro Fertilization (IVF)

In vitro fertilization (IVF) is the most common and effective type of assisted reproductive technology to help women become pregnant. The procedure involves fertilizing an egg outside the body, in a laboratory dish, and then implanting it in a woman’s uterus. All IVF treatments start with a course of hormone therapy to stimulate the development of several follicles in the ovary. These are collected as eggs, which are then fertilized in a test-tube (‘in vitro’) to create several embryos. After between two and five days in an incubator, one or two of these embryos are transferred through the vagina to the uterus, where implantation occurs and pregnancy begins.

INTRA UTERINE INSEMINATION

Intrauterine insemination (IUI) involves a laboratory procedure to separate fast moving sperm from more sluggish or non-moving sperm. The fast moving sperm are then placed into the woman’s womb close to the time of ovulation when the egg is released from the ovary in the middle of the monthly cycle. This treatment does not involve the manipulation of a woman’s eggs, and therefore is not considered an assisted reproductive technology (ART) procedure. An insemination procedure uses a thin, flexible tube (catheter) to put sperm into the woman’s reproductive tract. Prior to insemination, the sperm usually are washed and concentrated. In IUI the sperm from the male partner are often combined with super ovulation medicine to increase the number of available eggs.

INTRA CYTOPLASMIC SPERM INJECTION (ICSI)

This is an in vitro fertilization procedure in which a single sperm is injected directly into an egg. In ICSI all the steps are similar to the procedure of IVF, except the step of fertilization. Normally in IVF one egg is mixed with 100,000 sperms and one of the sperms fertilizes the egg on its own. In contrast, in ICSI each egg is held and injected with a single live sperm..
